Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is located in London just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. The Abbey is a living church where worship still takes place today and it is also the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English monarchs. St Edward the confessor's shrine is at the heart of the Abbey Church and is surrounded by the tombs and memorials of many great men and women from British History.
More than a 1000 years worth of treasures such as paintings, stained glass and textiles are on view to the public within the stunning Gothic architecture of this church.For an additional price there are verger-led tours, guided tours and audio guides available in German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese.

The Westminster Abbey Museum is sited in the vaulted undercroft of St Peter. This is one of the oldest areas of Westminster Abbey, dating back almost to the foundation of the Norman church by Edward the Confessor in 1065. Exhibits include a unique collection of royal and other funeral effigies, as well as other treasures, including the 13th century altarpiece known as the Westminster Retable, England's oldest altarpiece. Some other artefacts on display include the saddle, sword, helm and shield of Henry V dating from the early 15th century, 12th century sculpture from the Norman abbey, Mary II's Coronation chair, and the armour of General Monck carried at his funeral in 1670.

Wax effigies in the museum include a likeness of Horatio, Viscount Nelson, and Prime Minister William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, modelled by the American-born sculptor Patience Wright.
